The architectural language of post-war modernism shapes our cities to a large extent. From a historical point of view, the buildings constructed during this period, which are now getting on in years, often have an important significance, but do not usually fall within the scope of listed building protection.

Demolition or sustainable substance renewal, revitalisation while preserving the design language and context? From an investor's point of view, it often seems more economical to demolish an existing building and replace it with a new one - a short-sighted and not very environmentally conscious decision. When taking a holistic view of the building's life cycle, refurbishment is much more sustainable from an ecological and, above all, an energy perspective. Every demolition means a release of grey energy, the primary energy that was used to construct the building.

The office TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten has been committed to sustainable and respectful revitalisation for years. The office has implemented this attitude and approach in numerous national and international projects.

Due to the gradually growing appreciation of the existing building fabric, an increasing awareness of issues of sustainability, resource conservation, energy- and space-efficient use and the circular economy, buildings threatened with demolition are now increasingly being investigated and implemented for possible conversion. A respectful revitalisation provides for the history of the building, its architectural language and its role and effect in the urban space to be taken into consideration in the context of the conversion.

Industrial buildings from the 1960s to 1980s also have enormous potential. They were built in the former peripheries often without a direct reference to a specific, urban context. The vacant buildings, shells or ruins of shells can be architecturally reinterpreted in the course of conversion and put to a contemporary use.
