Mercure Hotel Wittenbergplatz
Berlin | 2017
With its distinctive metro station building by Alfred Grenander, the Wittenbergplatz opens towards the shopping streets Tauentzien and Ku'damm. On this prominent place, in close proximity to the renowned shopping centre KaDeWe the ensemble of the Mercure Hotel was completed. The hotel consists of a refurbished building and a new construction. Both volumes are connected with each other whereby it has been one of the biggest challenges during the construction phase.

The new reinforced concrete construction with eight floors shows a noble façade clad in Portuguese limestone towards the square. The stone surface is finished in two different ways: polished and rough-shaped. The slim polished strips structure the façade in a horizontal and vertical way, framing the rough-shaped parts, which are slightly staggered back. The narrow room-high windows go over two floors and strengthen the vertical alignment of the building. The open, mainly glazed basement and first floor are organized by delicate pilasters.

The corner building was erected in 1890 and has already been modernized and supplemented with an attic in 1990ies. After the current refurbishment and conversation the old building is now connected with the new construction throughout all levels. According current sustainability requirements the façades as well as the roof of the old building had a thermal upgrade, old windows were replaced and a new fire protection system was installed. Moreover the whole building is now barrier-free.

The hotel has 183 rooms in total (106 in the new construction, 77 in the old part) as well as four gastronomic spaces in the ground floor. The generously landscaped inner courtyard features a high-quality design.
