New building and 1st prize in the facade competition

The facade should speak volumes for the new building for the furniture manufacturer IKEA in Karlsruhe: The architects work with the company logo and allow it to flow unobtrusively into the building surface by means of variations. The white cladding, which at first glance appears to be only slightly iridescent, can be seen on closer inspection as linked, mirrored and shifted wordmarks. The encrypted corporate identity is thus conveyed in a light and lively way. Visitors and passers-by can perceive this play within the facade differently depending on the time of day or season.

The horizontally aligned solitaire with a total area of 100,430 square metres is anything but monumental. Above the blue pedestal area, the airy writing coat of white, edged aluminium sheets contrasts with large glazed areas. The sheets themselves are used both in front of blue insulated wall panels and in front of glazed and open, ventilated areas. The classic, discreetly used colour mix of blue and yellow refers to the owner's CI. The consistent eaves height lends the building a relaxed tranquillity in the urban space.
