Departmentstore Europacenter
Berlin | 2007
New building for Saturn

Situated at Breitscheidplatz in the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf of Berlin, Europacenter was built in 1963-65 following plans by architects Hentrich and Petschnigg. The building complex comprises three sections: a low building hosting a shopping mall, a hotel and a cinema, an 85 metre high rise office building and a multi-storey car park on Nürnberger Straße.
The cinema has been replaced by a six-storey stand-alone department store. Staggered horizontally, each of the building‘s storey recedes and fuses to form a semi-high-rise, presenting an unbroken façade oriented to Tauentzienstraße, blending into the patterns of the adjoining buildings and of the existing structure‘s cubature. Each horizontal layer comprises a vertically structured steel-glass construction with slightly slanted glass panels to build a scale-like surface. The glazing is decorated with imprints of images from the media world. The individual images have been transferred onto the rows of glass panes in the form of a film sequence referring to the building‘s cinematic history.
